16-17 August Karate practice at Kyoto Sangyo University
In this summer, it was our honour to attend a 2-days training at Kyoto Sangyo University, it was even an valuable experience to be coached by the WKF 84KG world champion and head coach of Kyoto Sangyo University karate club Mr. Ryutaro Araga.
The 2-days training was unforgettable in a way that it was intense and unique. As it was a kumite training session, all students were focus on technique, speed, power and accuracy. During the training with local university students, we were able to see that no matter their stamina or mental strength, all of the students were in excellent condition.
At first we were not able to adapt the environment under the heat as the venue has no air-condition. However when we got used to it, we found that even there was no air-conditioner, the design of the hall was able to bring fresh air in, which we found it was just fit for having sports training there. It was a benefit for athletes as the natural environment would help to improve their stamina and breathing which is essential for karate students. The most important thing is we were able to understand a Japanese term “Zanshin” (殘心) which means the spirit that you won’t give up easily and aim to do it until you are exhausted. We could see that every Japanese karate student had their Zanshin and it was the reason why they are so focused, they punches were fast and accurate, they were also excellent in controlling distance. With this kind of spirit, they are all good karateka and this is what we should learn from them, the spirit of karate.
And of course we are much obliged to Ryushinkai Hong Kong Branch chairman Au San for arranging this memorable training session at Kyoto Sangyo University. We are looking forward to having the next training session with them in the future.
